Guidelines for data delivery

With this data sheet we would like to give you some basic information you should consider when creating your print data.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone.

CTP/Prepress: +49 (57 31) 75 88-53

Please note that any additional adjustments to the data must be invoiced separately by us. In addition, any extra effort can influence the production and delivery time.

PDF
To ensure a smooth process, we recommend the exchange format PDF. PDF files according to a PDF/X standard (PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 or PDF/X-4) offer you the possibility of a pre-check. Unpleasant PDF properties (e.g. unembedded fonts, missing trimbox, existing comments, etc.) are avoided right from the start.

Our workflow uses the Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) and interprets transparencies.

All fonts must be embedded.

The trimbox must be set correctly.

Open Data
When supplying open data, please ensure completeness. All necessary documents, images and fonts must be included. To do this, use the collection routines of the layout programs.

Office programs such as Word and PowerPoint are only conditionally suitable for creating print data.

The additional work involved in processing open data will be charged separately.

Pages
In order to be able to assign the data to the corresponding folding scheme, we need the data as single pages. Also make sure that collapsed pages are usually shortened.

Perfect binding
For production with perfect binding, please create the cover as a double page including spine. The required back strength will be told by your salesperson.

The stapling effect of an adhesive binding leads to low „loss of motive“ in the waistband. Consider a 3 mm doubled waistband on each side in the layout to compensate this (see illustration below).

In the case of an overflow of motif from the cover (inside) to the first/last content page, an margin of 6 mm must be taken into account (see illustration below).

Bleed
The surrounding bleed should be at least 3 mm. The position of the crop marks at least 3 mm outside the final format.

Line widths / font sizes
With positive lines less than 0.05 mm and with negative lines less than 0.1 mm, a perfect printed image cannot be guaranteed.

For colored text (more than 1 color separation) with a font size below 5 pt and negatively cut-out text below 7 pt, register problems cannot be excluded.

Small font sizes should also be avoided for some types of finishing (e.g. partial UV varnish, embossing, etc.). Ask your salesperson in advance.

Resolution
Colored images should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

A resolution of more than 450 dpi (for coloured motifs) does not increase the print quality and should be avoided for a smooth process. For line drawings (bitmap) we recommend a resolution of 1200 dpi.

We reserve the right to charge separately for the additional costs incurred by processing delivered print data with resolutions above 450 dpi.

Colours
Please supply your data in the process colors CMYK, plus spot colors if necessary. When using spot colors, pay attention to clear color names (HKS 93 K, PANTONE Cool Gray 9, ect.).

After consultation, media-neutral data (RGB, Lab) can also be processed. In this case, correctly profiled data, color-consistent proofs and an intensive coordination are absolutely essential. The processing of media-neutral data may lead to unexpected results.

Colour profile
The output condition depends on the paper that is used. Standard profiles for the different paper classes are available at http://www.eci.org/en/downloads

Fogra 39 – ISO Coated v2 300% (ECI)
Gloss or matte coated, white, wood-free printing paper (paper types 1 and 2)

Fogra 47 – PSO Uncoated ISO 12647 (ECI)
Uncoated white offset paper (paper type 4)

Fogra 51 – PSO Coated v3
Premium coated paper

Fogra 52 – PSO Uncoated v3
Offset, woodfree, uncoated, white paper

If you are using special papers, please consult your seller – they will help you.

Maximum/minimum ink coverage
The output condition also defines the maximum ink coverage.

Fogra 39: max. 330%
Fogra 47: max. 300%
Fogra 51: max. 300%
Fogra 52: max. 300%

Please note that unprofessional image corrections lead to increased colour coverage. These limits must also be taken into account for technical colors (vector graphics, texts, etc.).

Tone values below 3% do not have stable printing behavior and should be avoided.

Color-consistent proof prints
Valid proof prints increase the reliability of production. They include the Fogra media wedge and are matched to the output condition of the print paper.

Finishing
Certain types of finishing may make special requirements on the data. Get in touch with us early to ask individual questions. We will be glad to help you create your data optimally.

Data validation
Delivered data will be checked by us according to the principles of technical feasibility.

We are not responsible for the integrity and factual correctness of your data. For legal reasons, no changes will be made to the content of the data supplied without your consent.

If you wish, you can also have the german contents read by our proofreaders.

Correction pages
In case of correction only send us the data of the pages to be exchanged. Correction pages are calculated page by page.
